Overview

“You go in Thorne as a soldier. You come out as something else… or not at all.”
— Sgt Ryan Peterson, 19th Heavy Infantry Corp

Overview

Bastion Thorne is not a military base.
It is a crucible. A place where humanity’s edge is shattered, reforged, and etched with the runes of Dämmerlicht.

Located 150 kilometers northwest of New London—deep within the frostbitten hinterlands—the complex was built not for visibility or glory, but necessity. Its walls do not boast. They endure. Its name is spoken in hushed tones across briefing rooms, war councils, and classified blacksite files.

Those selected for the Dämmerlicht Initiative—volunteers, criminals, ghosts—are brought here to be unmade and reconstructed into rune-bound combatants. What begins as training soon becomes survival. And what survives becomes terrifyingly effective.

Architecture and Security

  • Brutalist to the bone, Bastion Thorne was carved from reinforced steel, blackened concrete, and adaptive alloys scavenged from pre-Cataclysm war vaults. At a distance, it resembles a massive wedge driven into the earth—a monolith anchoring a storm.

The facility is divided into four vertical tiers, each serving a distinct function:

    • Topside: Landing pads, killbox gates, and automated perimeter defenses

    • Mid-Level: Training grounds, barracks, armories

    • Core Labs: Experimental chambers, augmentation bays, rune synthesis foundries

    • Sub-Level Black: Restricted archives, high-risk containment, and data vaults buried in geomagnetic shielding

Security is absolute. Key features include:

  • Perimeter Array “Thorns” – concealed railgun towers and counter-magic turrets buried in faux terrain

  • Hallowed Lattice – runic energy grid woven through the infrastructure, capable of suppressing mana bursts or neutralizing rogue Dämmerlicht units

Wraithwatch AI – an adaptive security program rumored to track movement patterns, heart rate, and emotional spikes
The guards here are not ornamental—they are veterans with full combat authority and zero patience for unauthorized behavior.

Atmosphere and Acoustics

  • The air inside Bastion Thorne is sterile, dry, and faintly metallic.
Footsteps echo too crisply. Voices sound thinner. Even breathing feels calibrated. There is no music, no birdsong, no idle hum—only the mechanical exhale of the base itself.

Certain areas—particularly the lower levels—are engineered to create psychological tension.

  • Hallways narrow slightly over distance.

  • Lights strobe with imperceptible rhythm shifts.

Sound baffles create unnatural silence after speech, making every conversation feel like a confession. Trainees often report feeling like they’re being watched—even when alone. Especially when alone.

Purpose

Officially, Bastion Thorne is a joint training, research, and operations hub for the Dämmerlicht Program.

In practice, it is a hybrid between academy, laboratory, and containment site:

  • Rune Synchronization Testing: New trainees are monitored under extreme conditions to force harmony—or expose instability.

  • Augmentation Trials: Surgical, magical, and alchemical enhancements are administered here, many still in prototype stages.

  • Black-Ops Staging: Select Dämmerlicht operatives are deployed from Thorne on missions deemed too volatile for conventional forces.

  • Containment & Disposal: Failed subjects are… secured. What happens after that is redacted in most reports.

Unofficially, Bastion Thorne has no oversight. What happens within is sealed beneath national secrecy laws and classified as “Post-Human Combat Doctrine: Tier Black.”

Notable Features and Spaces

  • The Fracture Yards: An outdoor ruin-turned-combat course where trainees are thrown into survival exercises among broken vehicles, rune mines, and stalking drones.

  • The Resonant Chamber: A soundproof hall with runes etched into every wall—used to test harmonic thresholds of new Dämmerlicht units. Screaming is normal. Screaming is expected.

  • Hangar D-7 “Chiron’s Nest”: Where prototype gear and weapons are issued to those who survive early trials. Staffed by engineers who don’t sleep, only upgrade.

  • The Hollow Cells: Deep in Sub-Level Black, subjects who lose control or become unstable are confined in reinforced prism cells. Access requires five-tier biometric authorization… or a death wish.

  • The Obsidian Crucible: A ritual combat ring. Not all lessons are taught by instructors. Some are burned into flesh by peers.

Location & Influence

Bastion Thorne lies isolated in a snow-cloaked no-man’s-land—150km northwest of New London, nestled in a valley choked by ash-fall and icy wind. Drones patrol the skies. Rail lines end miles away. The surrounding forests are mined, warded, and silent.

Its isolation is its first weapon.

Yet its influence stretches far.
Graduates of Bastion Thorne have altered battlefields. Changed outcomes. Erased resistance. The mere rumor of a Thorne-born operative appearing on a mission roster is enough to cause enemy desertion rates to spike.

No one wants to be sent to Bastion Thorne.

But those who leave it?

They are never sent anywhere again.

They are deployed.
