Humans

Overview

Overview

Once the architects of cities, empires, and planetary-scale wars, humans of the Dyade are no longer the stable center of civilization — they are its wildcards, its catalysts, and in some cases, its weapons. Exposure to the ambient magical vapors known as Magic Monicues, paired with generations of genetic drift and bio-experimentation during and after the Earth–Karthaheim War, has altered the human species forever.

Some still resemble their ancestors: pragmatic, clever, adaptable. But others have awakened into psionic sensitivity, wielding powers once thought divine — controlling fire, wind, kinetic force, even thought and memory — through a fusion of mental will, Monicue resonance, and rune amplification. These Awakened Humans, or Rune-Psions, now shape the balance of power across the Dyade.

Humans have fractured across cultural, ideological, and biological lines. Some embrace mutation, others fear it. Some build high-tech sanctuaries powered by rune-tech, while others live in mystic clans in Monicue-saturated wildlands. They are a people searching for identity in a world they helped break, trying to survive in the long shadow of their own legacy.

They are found everywhere — from floating sky-cities powered by psionic cores, to Monicue storm-front borderlands, to underground bunkers where sterile survivors fear the outside air. Humanity is no longer united — if it ever was — but it remains the most unpredictable and explosive force in the Dyade’s fractured worlds.

History and Lore

Humans were once the primary dominant race on Earth, a status that lasted until the Karthaheim breach — the great Riftfall that opened their world to magic, monsters, and metaphysics. Faced with arcane beings beyond understanding, humans did what humans do best: they adapted, they weaponized, and they experimented.

During the war with Karthaheim, humans:

  • Developed Rune-Tech — an interface of language-magic and psionic willpower

  • Conducted genetic trials to "awaken" soldiers for Monicue-rich combat zones

  • Manufactured machine-armies (like the Tetra Gamatrons) to act as cannon fodder

  • Aligned with factions of rogue Karthaheim sorcerers to learn their secrets

These adaptations came at a price. The Monicues, once just atmospheric anomalies, began bonding with human biology. Those exposed during pregnancy birthed children with psionic anomalies. Some could lift objects with thought. Others could cause fires with emotion. A few could even speak directly to machines or imprint their minds into memory crystals.

After the war, humanity’s golden age was gone. Their cities lay in ruin. Their control shattered. But what remained was resilience through evolution. In every dark zone, in every collapsing tower, a psion was born — and where they survived, humanity changed.

Physical Descriptions

Modern humans display a vast range of appearances depending on geography, exposure, and lineage. While most retain a generally recognizable humanoid form, Monicue influence and psionic traits have introduced visible markers of mutation:

  • Eyes that glow faintly with psionic charge or change color with emotion

  • Hair that shifts texture or color in response to environmental energies

  • Skin patterns — veins of light, glowing rune-scars, or crystalline freckles

  • Some psions develop psionic auras — faint visual distortions when emotional

  • Psi-Marked Humans may even hover slightly, leave scorch marks when angered, or dream in other people’s memories

Non-psionic humans exist as well, often untouched by Monicues, either through isolation, sterilization, or sheer luck. These “baseline” humans are often viewed with suspicion, reverence, or pity.

Culture and Society

  • Human cultures are highly decentralized, ranging from tribal wanderers to semi-industrial city-states. Despite their diversity, some common features include:

    • Ritual tattoos tied to psionic lineage or rune proficiency

    • Naming traditions blending ancestral names with chosen titles (e.g., Tarren of the Ember Sigil, Lysa Waveburn)

    • Memory Oracles — psions who preserve collective history by encoding memories in crystal or song

    • Dream-Conclaves — groups that enter shared psionic trances to train or divine outcomes

    • Fire Ceremonies — symbolic purging of old identity to accept psionic awakening

Education is deeply important in psionically active cultures, as control is essential to survival. Young psions are often sent to Rune Circles, Psionic Academies, or Monicue Sanctuaries to prevent accidental outbursts.

But we did. And now we burn like stars.”
