Description
The Covenant of Thorns is an ancient vampire dominion masquerading as a noble compact, bound not by loyalty but by hunger sharpened into law. They are aristocrats of undeath, ruling through lineage, ritualized cruelty, and the careful cultivation of fear.
Where other undead rot openly, the Covenant cultivates elegance. Their halls are lit by twilight glass and perfumed blood incense. Their wars are waged through treaties before talons. To them, eternity is not a curse—it is a resource.
Publicly, the Covenant presents itself as a sovereign power seeking stability along the Twilight Zone’s fractured borders. In truth, they are empire-builders in waiting, aligning with Umbral Vex not out of devotion, but strategy. The dead are tools. Memory is currency. Territory is destiny.
Their banners bear thorns instead of crowns, and every rose is watered with something that once begged.
History
The Covenant predates modern borders, tracing its origins to the First Dimming—when night ceased to be merely absence and became an active force. The earliest members were warlords, philosophers, and priests who refused oblivion and bent undeath into an inheritance.
Under the rule of Duke Alerron Malik Dariaes, the Covenant abandoned fragmentation and blood-feuds in favor of structured dominion. Alerron codified vampiric law, established bloodline hierarchies, and negotiated the first shadow-pacts with Umbral Vex—trading territory access and mortal assets for necromantic protection and arcane leverage.
Over centuries, the Covenant withdrew from overt conquest, instead embedding themselves into borderlands, trade routes, and twilight regions where law thins and shadows linger longer than they should.
They do not rush. Eternity rewards patience.
Structure
The Thorned Duke – Alerron Malik Dariaes, supreme ruler of the Covenant. Ancient, calculating, and rumored to have survived multiple executions through unknown blood rites.
The Crimson Houses – Major vampiric bloodlines sworn to the Covenant, each controlling territory, resources, and specialized thralls.
Nightwardens – Enforcers, assassins, and battlefield commanders tasked with enforcing Covenant law and expanding influence.
Sanguine Clerisy – Blood-scholars and ritualists who maintain lineage purity, curse-binding, and necromantic contracts.
The Bound – Mortal nobles, merchants, and captives bound by blood oath. Some serve willingly. Others serve forever.
Decisions are made through the Conclave of Thorns, where disputes are resolved via political maneuvering, ritual duels, or controlled bloodshed.
