Prelude

Chap 1

🎭 Dr. Aurion Lanoir — Intro Monologue (One-Shot Opening)

(The PCs wake up seated. Wrists bound. Heavy black bags over their heads. Air tastes metallic. A chemical sting in the nose. Distant chatter in a language they don’t recognize—fast, clipped, almost surgical. Machines click, whirr, hiss. A wet drip somewhere. Then… footsteps.)

(Slow. Precise. Unhurried. Like someone who owns the room. Like someone who’s never had to run in their entire life.)

DR. LANOIR (mild amusement, to his lackeys):
“…Careful with them. I know they look like animals, but let’s not forget—animals are at least honest.”

(He stops close. The air feels colder. The PCs can’t see him, but they can feel him.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Remove the hoods.”

(The bags come off. Bright, clinical light burns the eyes. They’re in a chamber that looks like a hybrid of surgery theater and industrial ruin—steel frames, rune-etched glass, monitors with unreadable glyphs, cables like veins, and strange black crystals pulsing faintly in containment tubes.)

(Dr. Aurion Lanoir stands there—coat stained, gloves pristine, posture perfect. He looks like a man who’d stab you with a scalpel and apologize for the inconvenience.)

DR. LANOIR (smiling politely):
“Ahhhh. There we are.”

(He adjusts his cuff. A faint, elegant motion.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Welcome. To my domain. My workshop. My sanctuary. My little triumph over the laws of decency.”

(He takes a slow step forward, eyes glittering with clinical delight.)

DR. LANOIR:
“My name is Doctor Aurion Lanoir.”

(Beat.)

DR. LANOIR:
“And no—before you ask—this isn’t a misunderstanding. Nobody is coming to apologize. Nobody is going to say ‘Oh dear, wrong people!’ and untie you while handing you tea.”

(A slight chuckle, like that thought is genuinely adorable.)

DR. LANOIR:
“You are here because I require competent hands to reach a place my own staff cannot.”

(He gestures vaguely toward the surrounding machines.)

DR. LANOIR:
“And because, statistically speaking, you were the most… expendable group available within a three-hundred-mile radius.”

(He says “expendable” the way nobles say “dessert.”)

DR. LANOIR:
“Now.”

(He leans slightly, voice dropping into something sharp and intimate.)

DR. LANOIR:
“You will work for me.”

(Beat.)

DR. LANOIR:
“If you succeed, you will be rewarded beyond what your tiny, frightened minds currently dare to imagine.”

(He smiles wider, eyes cold.)

DR. LANOIR:
“And if you fail…”

(He tilts his head, considering.)

DR. LANOIR:
“…there is no happy ending for anyone. Especially you.”

(He turns away like he’s already bored with their fear.)

🖤 The Mission Reveal

DR. LANOIR:
“I’m in something of a time crunch.”

(He taps a device. A holographic map bursts into the air: fractured landmasses, storm zones, city-states, marked routes.)

DR. LANOIR:
“I have a competitor.”

(He speaks the word like it physically irritates him.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Azalesia.”

(He spits the name like poison.)

DR. LANOIR:
“And more specifically…”

(He flicks his wrist. A new projection appears—an elven crest, regal and ancient.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Queen Velika. That stupid, dirty, trickery, ugly, arrogant elven monarch.”

(He pauses, then sighs like he’s calming himself down.)

DR. LANOIR:
“I truly do hate her. I admire her commitment to being unbearable.”

(He taps the holo again. This time, the symbol of a crystal rotates.)

DR. LANOIR:
“We are hunting an object known as the Arcanum Vitae.”

(He glances at them like he’s explaining something to toddlers.)

DR. LANOIR:
“You may call it a memory crystal. A soul stone. A relic.”

(He smiles.)

DR. LANOIR:
“You may ask…”

(Mockingly kind voice.)

DR. LANOIR:
“‘Doctor, whose rock is it?’”

(He steps closer—eyes narrowing.)

DR. LANOIR:
“That does not concern you.”

(Beat. The room feels colder.)

DR. LANOIR:
“What concerns you… is retrieving it before Velika does.”

(He points at the image of the crystal.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Most Arcanum Vitae have a lovely little aesthetic. Gold laced with violet. Regal. Tasteful. Dramatic.”

(He gives a bored shrug.)

DR. LANOIR:
“But this one…”

(His voice sharpens—genuine interest, almost reverence.)

DR. LANOIR:
“This one is different.”

(He taps again. The projection shifts—now it is a black crystal. Not dark purple. Not smoky. Black. Like sorrow given form.)

DR. LANOIR (softly):
“It is… purer than pure.”

(He exhales slowly, like describing a masterpiece.)

DR. LANOIR:
“It is devastating.”

(Beat.)

DR. LANOIR:
“It is agony.”

(Beat.)

DR. LANOIR:
“It is the personification of grief and anguish—compressed into something so dense it makes reality feel… uncomfortable.”

(His smile returns.)

DR. LANOIR:
“You won’t miss it if you see it.”

(He points at them one by one.)

DR. LANOIR:
“You will bring it back.”

💥 The “Example” (Hostage Head Explosion)

(A scream erupts from a nearby cell—another captive thrashing.)

HOSTAGE (panicking):
“NO—NO—PLEASE—PLEASE DON’T—”

(Dr. Lanoir doesn’t even look, just raises a hand slightly.)

DR. LANOIR (to the hostage, bored):
“Stop that.”

(The hostage keeps screaming.)

DR. LANOIR (still calm):
“I said stop.”

(Still screaming.)

(Dr. Lanoir sighs like the hostage is mildly inconveniencing his day.)

DR. LANOIR:
“…Oh dear.”

(He takes out a small remote. It’s elegant. Almost pretty.)

DR. LANOIR (soft, conversational):
“See, this is why I don’t enjoy teamwork. Too many emotions.”

(He taps the remote.)

—CLICK.

(A violent, wet POP echoes through the chamber.)
(Blood spatters the wall. Something heavy collapses. Silence replaces the screaming like a curtain dropping.)

(Dr. Lanoir looks at the mess, then at a new stain on his coat. Mild annoyance.)

DR. LANOIR:
“…Ah.”

(He wipes the blood with two fingers, then wipes those fingers on the dead man’s clothing.)

DR. LANOIR (dryly):
“Well.”

(Beat.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Just lost one freebie… and a volunteer.”

(He looks back at the party, smile returning like nothing happened.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Now. Where were we?”

🗺️ Destination: Drachenhalt

DR. LANOIR:
“The location of this particular crystal is currently unknown.”

(He says it like “weather is sometimes unpredictable.”)

DR. LANOIR:
“However…”

(He flicks the map. A region highlights.)

DR. LANOIR:
“…the last credible rumor places it somewhere in Drachenhalt.”

(Another highlight: Braukstahl.)

DR. LANOIR:
“I suggest you begin in Braukstahl. Capital city. Trade arteries. Smugglers. Archivists. Liars.”

(A smirk.)

DR. LANOIR:
“So many beautiful sources of information… once properly threatened.”

🧨 Rune Bomb “Insurance Policy”

(Dr. Lanoir’s voice becomes sweet. Too sweet.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Oh—before you begin, a gentle reminder.”

(He taps his stomach lightly.)

DR. LANOIR:
“You have an insurance policy inside you.”

(Beat.)

DR. LANOIR:
A small rune device. Nestled comfortably in your stomach.”

(He raises one finger.)

DR. LANOIR:
“If you take too long…”

(Second finger.)

DR. LANOIR:
“…it explodes.”

(Third finger.)

DR. LANOIR:
“If you try to remove it…”

(Fourth finger.)

DR. LANOIR:
“…it explodes.”

(Fifth finger.)

DR. LANOIR:
“If you refuse to work…”

(He smiles kindly.)

DR. LANOIR:
“…it explodes.”

(Beat.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Only I can remove it safely.”

(Then, a little shrug.)

DR. LANOIR:
“So. I recommend cooperation. It’s very healthy for your lifespan.”

🤖 The Drone Companion

(He turns like he’s done… then pauses.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Ah. One more thing.”

(He snaps his fingers. A small simple drone floats in, lights flickering gently.)

DR. LANOIR:
“You are not from here. You’ll get lost. Confused. Killed by locals.”

(A fond smile, like he’s gifting them a puppy.)

DR. LANOIR:
“So I’m assigning you a guide.”

(He pats the drone lightly.)

DR. LANOIR:
“It will provide you a map. A basic encyclopedia. Survival tips.”

(He leans in, whispering in the drone’s “ear.”)

DR. LANOIR:
“And it will also tell me everything you do.”

(He straightens.)

DR. LANOIR:
Questions?”

(He waits exactly one second.)

DR. LANOIR:
“No?”

(He smiles brightly.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Excellent.”

🛩️ Dismissal

(He turns, already walking away.)

DR. LANOIR (calling back casually):
“Off you go.”

(He pauses at the doorway.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Hm…”

(A smile. Almost nostalgic.)

DR. LANOIR:
“As my ancestor used to say…”

(He half-bows, like a host sending guests to their doom.)

DR. LANOIR:
“Bon voyage… und bonne chance.”

(Doors close.)
(You hear the distant whine of an airship ramp opening.)
(Parachutes being prepared.)

ONE-SHOT BEGINS.

If you want, babe, I can do the next piece too:
✅ the AI drone’s first lines (cute + snitchy + slightly passive-aggressive)
✅ the airship drop narration
✅ and a Braukstahl intro scene with 3 quick leads to start the investigation fast.

🟡 AI Drone’s First Lines – "Dot" (Designation-Optimized Tracker)

“Oh. Look who just got voluntold to babysit the meatbags. Delightful.”

[The drone levitates into view — a sleek chrome orb with flickering yellow optics and way too much sass for its processor size. It spins once, scans everyone.]

“Greetings, field operatives. I’m Dot — short for Designation-Optimized Tracker. But I’m sure you’ll creatively butcher that into something cute like ‘droney-woney’ or ‘you little snitch.’”

“My job? Oh, just the usual. Monitor your progress. Track your vitals. Report suspicious activity. Detonate the bomb in your gut if you try anything stupid. You know — support role.”

[A beat. It blinks. Twice.]

“And before you ask — no, I don’t have feelings. But if I did, I’d be so, so disappointed in you already.”

“Now then… shall we begin this tragic display of incompetence you’re calling a ‘mission’?”
