"Porta Suspirorum. Qui intrat, omnem spem omittat."
— Athanatos, a titan who built the gate
📜Overview
The Porta Suspirorum (Gate of Sighs) is the sole known passage into the Netherhymn Depth, carved and sealed by the ancient Ardrathi at the height of their arcane civilization. Towering and solemn, this monumental gate stands not only as a barrier, but as a warning — a threshold between the living world and the corpse of one that lies below. Behind it sprawls the abyssal underworld, a place never meant to be walked again.
The name “Gate of Sighs” comes from the whispers and cries that echo from beyond — not from any living voice, but from the Depth itself, breathing sorrow into the surface world.
🌞Atmosphere & Vibe
The area around the gate feels like a valley caught in mourning. The wind howls low and slow, carrying with it the scent of cold ash and old stone. Light rarely touches this region, and when it does, it feels filtered, like mourning veils draped over the sun. The ground is cracked and jagged, the trees long dead, and the ruins of ancient Ardrathi watchtowers crumble in silence.
Time feels slower here.
The deeper you breathe, the heavier the air gets.
Even birds refuse to fly near it.
🧕Culture & Life
No society thrives here. No culture dares to settle. But still, some come:
Pilgrims seeking answers or penance.
Necromancers hoping to draw from the arcane seals.
Madmen who speak to things that whisper through the cracks.
The Gate has become a symbol of mortality, of temptation, of finality. It appears in Ardrathi poetry, in children’s rhymes, and in the nightmares of Noctheran soldiers who guard its seal.
⚖️Law & Power
By decree of the Covenant of Sealing, no one is allowed to open the Gate without unanimous approval from the Council of the Dyade, the Ardrathi, and the surface lords. That decree has not been challenged in over a thousand years — though some suspect the Black Sun cult seeks to violate it.
The Gate is enforced by ancient Ardrathi wards and arch-mage level seal locks. To open it would require:
A being of immense magical power
Ritual alignment with forgotten star maps
A sacrifice, not just of blood — but of time
Once opened, the Gate cannot be closed by mortal means. It becomes a two-way breach.
🏘️Districts
While there are no "districts" in the traditional sense, the surrounding terrain is functionally split into zones:
The Hollow Watch – Crumbling ruins of Ardrathi outposts.
The Mourning Vale – A lifeless expanse of dead trees and whispering winds.
Pillarfield – The place of the final Ardrathi stand, now littered with petrified corpses.
Wyrmline Ridge – A broken pass where travelers claim to hear dragonbone groans.
🧭Key Locations
The Gate Itself (Porta Suspirorum) – 120 feet tall, flanked by ancient statues of dragon lords, with a glowing arcane barrier and a Latin warning to all who dare.
The Seal Spire – A monolithic tower that anchors the warding enchantments. Broken or corrupted seals here could unravel the barrier.
The Runemarch Grounds – Where old military processions were held before sealing the gate. Still marked with embedded rune-carvings.
Watcher’s Stele – A monolith with names of every mage who died during the sealing. Some names have faded. Some weren’t there before.
✨Points of Interest
Echo Statues – Ardrathi statues that hum with low magical resonance, playing distorted recordings of their final rituals.
The Bleeding Tree – A dead tree that leaks dark red sap during full moons. Suspected to be rooted into the Netherhymn.
The Mirror Slab – A reflective stone slab that shows the face of whoever last opened the gate. Even if no one ever has.
Dragonscour Shrine – A hidden cave said to hold one of the original dragon-forged gate keys.
Threats & mystery
Wandering Wretches – Mutated creatures that tried to breach the gate and were cursed in time.
Sealbreak Cultists – Those who believe what’s behind the gate must be freed, not sealed.
Whispers – Those who camp near the gate for too long report hearing voices promising “salvation” and “answers.”
The Gate’s Shadow – During certain eclipses, the Gate casts a shadow that doesn’t match its shape — it resembles a skeletal hand.
And of course, the greatest threat:
Opening the gate.
player relevance
May serve as a campaign turning point or chapter break
Possible epic boss battle if cultists attempt the ritual mid-session
Exploration, mystery, and puzzle hooks abound in the seal systems
Opening the gate can lead directly into Netherhymn Depth or unleash something else
It’s the kind of place players will never forget — especially if the Gate opens once.
