Faraway Chasm

Overview

“Down here, the rock doesn’t just break your back. It listens for your heartbeat. If you stop moving, it swallows you whole.”
— Ajax, veteran miner

📜Overview

Midway, the party rests at a small cliffside refuge called Faraway Chasm—a semi-nomadic town carved into layered canyon walls.

Skoii Skax is a jagged scar of survival etched into the canyon ridges of Crownshale (the fractured remains of the post-apocalyptic UK). Originally established as a temporary frontier outpost to strip a massive Helium-3 vein discovered during a Monicue flare-quake, the settlement refused to die when the missions ended.

Now, it is a precarious, vertical city of scavenged steel and scorched rock, dangling over the unstable Cindershade Trench. It serves as the primary—and most dangerous—source of Helium-3, the volatile fuel required for high-tier Dämmerlicht armor runes, Earth-Karthaheim hybrid airships, and the forbidden tech of the Overwatch prototypes.

  • Symbols: A cracked pickaxe crossed over a glowing blue rune-drop, usually scorched into rusted scrap metal.

  • Archetype: Industrial frontier, mining colony, precarious vertical slum.

  • Alignment: Chaotic Neutral; a lawless meritocracy where your worth is measured in ore-weight.

  • Operating Philosophy: “Dig deep. Breath fast. Don't look down.”

🌞Atmosphere & Vibe

Skoii Skax is a sensory assault of heat, dust, and the constant, low-frequency hum of unstable magic. The sky is a bruised orange, and the air tastes like ozone and pulverized stone.

It vibrates with:

  • Mechanical Screams: The rhythmic thumping of heavy bore-drills and the shriek of rusted rune-tethers holding platforms over the abyss.

  • The Scorched Scent: The smell of burnt engine oil, recycled oxygen, and the sharp, metallic tang of raw Helium-3.

  • Unstable Earth: Constant micro-tremors—"shaking events"—that make the scavenged rail-walkways rattle and the soul tremble.

  • The Glow of the Trench: At night, the bottomless crevasse below glows with a sickly, pulsating violet light from decaying magical residue.

  • Hardened Faces: Miners in breath-masks, mercenaries with sand-pitted armor, and children who know how to sharpen a shiv before they can read.

🧕Culture & Life

Life in Skoii Skax is a desperate gamble. The population is a volatile mix of Dämmerlicht rejects, nomads with nowhere else to go, and fortune hunters who value a Helium-3 capsule more than their own limbs.

Cultural norms are forged in the heat of the Boreline:

  • The Scrap-Etch Ritual: Names of the fallen aren't buried (there’s no soft dirt); they are etched into scrap metal and nailed to Memorial Ridge.

  • Rune-Scrawl Fashion: Clothing is functional and heavy—leather, lead-lined canvas, and boots reinforced with Gamatron plating to survive the "hot" tunnels.

  • The Silent Toast: When a crew returns from the Trench, they drink in silence at Vulture’s Roost—a tribute to those still down in the dark.

While New London worships order, Skoii Skax worships the Next Shift. Faith is placed in the strength of a tether and the reliability of a sensor, though a growing "Rock-Whisperer" cult believes the tremors are the planet trying to communicate.

⚖️Law & Power

There is no "Council" here. There is only the Production Quota. Power is held by those who control the air, the water, and the drills.

  • The Foreman’s Word: Ajax runs the mines with an iron fist. If you don't dig, you don't eat.

  • The Enforcers: Vollken, a terrifying Dämmerlicht survivor, leads a group of "Heavy Loaders" who act as a makeshift police force. They don't arrest you; they throw you off a walkway.

  • The Ashrunners: A technical guild led by Lysa, who manages the sensor arrays. They are the only thing keeping the town from falling into the trench.

Crime is tolerated unless it interferes with the Helium flow. Sabotage is the only capital offense, punishable by being "Un-tethered"—dropped into the Cindershade Trench without a harness.

🏘️Districts

🏗️ The Boreline

  • The vertical industrial spine of the town; a dizzying network of scaffolding, heavy lifts, and steam-pipes dropping directly into the Helium-3 veins.

🔥 The Pitforge Yard

  • A deafening central hub where raw ore is refined; filled with the glow of rune-fusing furnaces, mercenary recruiters, and heavy-loader mechs.

🪦 Memorial Ridge

  • A jagged cliff-face overlooking the abyss; a sacred, clinking field of scrap-metal grave markers that chime in the toxic wind.

🏚️ The Hanging Strata

  • The residential area—a vertical shantytown built into the canyon walls, connected by swaying, scavenged train-rail bridges.

🏮 The Low-Vent Fringe

  • The deepest habitable level where the poorest miners and rogue "Rock-Whisperer" cultists live in the shadow of the primary seal-gates.

🧭Key Locations

  • The Cinder-Gate – A massive, dormant Karthaheim portal-frame half-buried in the canyon floor; it hums with localized Monicue interference during flare-quakes

  • Vulture’s Roost – The town’s primary tavern and Mercenary HQ; run by the one-armed Reya Nox, it serves as the only "neutral" ground for contract negotiations.

  • The Primary Seal – A triple-reinforced rune gate at the base of the Boreline; the last line of defense between the town and the surge-creatures living in the deep shafts.

  • The Echo Chamber – A specific excavation site near the trench where Azura experiences sensory-ghosts; she hears a melodic, rhythmic humming that matches no known digital frequency.

  • Vault-Zero – A rumored, pre-Calamity bunker buried beneath the primary Helium vein; believed by scouts to be the source of the "unnatural" resource abundance.

✨Points of Interest

  • The Hum-Path: A specific, shimmering stretch of the Boreline where the Helium-3 concentration is highest. Here, Azura experiences sensory-ghosts; she hears a melodic, rhythmic humming that matches no known digital frequency, suggesting the mine itself is "broadcasting."

  • The "Old God" Tunnels: Deep, non-mining structures discovered by the scout Tamir. These passages defy both Earth and Karthaheim physics; their walls are etched with glowing maps of star systems that astronomers say haven't existed for millennia.
