Overview
“Beyond the veil of light lies a silence older than death… and far less forgiving.”
— Jortan, a forever lost adventurer
📜Overview
The Netherhymn Depth is a vast, forbidden underworld sprawling beneath the nation of Nocthera, serving as the sole subterranean bridge between the surface of Karthaheim and the horrors of Umbral Vex. Carved by the ruinous advance of the Umbral Vex during the ancient Ardrathi age, it is a place of eerie phenomena, unstable laws of reality, and forgotten civilizations. The Ardrathi sealed it with a colossal Ritual Gate, effectively trapping the Umbral Vex and its monstrous legions—until someone foolish or powerful enough opens the way once more.
🌞Atmosphere & Vibe
Step into the Depth, and reality warps. Light bends, time drips, shadows lie. The air tastes like wet stone and stale fear. Echoes come before the sound. Mushrooms bioluminesce with uncertain rhythm, casting flickering patterns like morse code from mad gods. Caverns stretch like cathedral vaults, hollowed from battles no one remembers. You’re not alone, even when you are.
The vibe blends:
Hollow geode-meets-forgotten tomb
Sci-fantasy horror with temporal weirdness
Absolute isolation with layers of haunting echoes
🧕Culture & Life
There are no cities. No society as mortals know it. But there is life. Sentient, primal, hungry life:
Echo-fiends that speak in the voice of loved ones to lure prey
Time-shattered undead forever reliving their death
A hidden tribe of unknown monsters, neither Umbral nor Nhafadi, watching from the edges of sanity
Twisted remnants of Ardrathi constructs—golems, archivists, and war-beasts, long abandoned but still running their last commands
Culture here is not lived, it is survived—or remembered incorrectly by the dead.
⚖️Law & Power
There is no law in Netherhymn Depth.
Only the Ritual Gate at the threshold enforces any sort of order, powered by Ardrathi seals and designed to keep the Depth closed. Once open, the Depth becomes a two-way breach, allowing monsters, necrotic energies, and worse to reach the surface world.
Power, such as it is, belongs to whatever ancient beings or entities remain beneath. Players may encounter:
Rogue Ardrathi machines still defending old runes
Umbral-aligned horrors sealed inside
Secret agents of Black Sun, exploiting cracks in the gate
🏘️Districts
The Netherhymn isn’t mapped like a city—but it has zones:
The Shardvault – Crystal-strewn halls where delay shadows are strongest
Greyspine – A region so deep all color is gone, making players feel blind even when they’re not
Gravemaw Reach – Chasms filled with ancient bones and Ardrathi tomb-walkers
The Looming Chasm – Where gravity flips, water climbs, and screams fall upward
Choral Basin – An echo chamber of ghostly chanting, suspected to house the unknown tribe
🧭Key Locations
The Ritual Gate – A cyclopean seal embedded with Ardrathi rune-pillars. Opening it is a global-scale risk.
The Veiled Archive – A half-collapsed Ardrathi structure storing fragmented records in psychic crystal format
Threnody Pillars – Stone towers that hum with melancholic tones, believed to mourn the dead
The Oubliette Bloom – A fungal biome where spores show you your own death
✨Points of Interest
Chronos-Drip Caverns – Time flows inconsistently. Expect temporal echoes and paradoxes.
The Inverse Lake – Water floats to the ceiling. You must cross by “falling upward.”
The Pale Mirror – A reflective stone where players can see themselves—but not as they are.
The Grey Curtain – A zone where even voices lose their tone. All sound becomes dull, lifeless.
