Backstory

📖 BACKSTORY

In the ancient, golden days of Karthaheim, there was no Nhafadi Zotan Ur'Nezu. There was only Zachriel Emberthorn. Born into a proud lineage of scholars and poets, Zachriel was the image of human elegance—handsome, curious, impossibly kind. In a world where magic was the guarded domain of elves, Zachriel was a spark of anomaly: a human child born with a faint magical attunement. Harmless, but rare. A marvel in a society that dismissed magic as something humans should never touch.

When Zachriel was ten, the world changed. A magical catastrophe—the Monicue Outburst—sent a wave of unstable arcane energy across the planet. Many died. Others went mad. But Zachriel changed. The surge fused with his body, embedding Monicue into his very cells. He became the first human to wield advanced, elven-tier magic by instinct. What others studied for decades, he did without thinking. The world took notice. And soon, so did its rulers.

He was taken into the Royal Academy, celebrated as a living miracle, and raised through the ranks until he stood at the king’s side. Beloved by the people, trusted by nobility, Zachriel became the kingdom’s first human Grand Master Mage. But behind the titles and acclaim, he remained a man who wanted only to protect his family: his wife, his children, the home he built with his hands.

That protection was used against him. When the king’s body began to decay with age, he summoned Zachriel with a command laced in desperation and cruelty: seek out the secret of immortality from the Elven Kingdoms. Zachriel refused. It was forbidden, unnatural. But the king threatened to harm his family should he disobey. Torn between ethics and blood, Zachriel complied.

He traveled into elven lands, where he met Queen Velika Vor’Gothe—a ruler more serpent than sovereign. She agreed to share the secret of eternal life, but only if Zachriel completed a series of increasingly cruel and arcane trials. Each task stripped away a piece of his humanity: one demanded the sacrifice of a childhood memory; another, the slaughter of an innocent beast. By the final trial, Zachriel's soul was bruised, cracked, and ready to receive what he believed would be the salvation of his people.

He returned home bearing the Book of Eternity. But the spell he cast did not grant immortality—it unleashed a horrific curse. The king and his court were transformed into gnarled, shrieking tree-beings, rooted to the floor, cursed to feel every moment of their decay. The kingdom turned on him instantly. Zachriel was branded a traitor, a saboteur sent by the Elves to destroy the human race.

As punishment, his entire bloodline was executed before his eyes—his wife dismembered, his children impaled, his name spat upon. Bound in cursed iron, he was sealed inside a coffin laced with anti-magic runes and dropped into the abyssal sea.

But Zachriel did not die.

His hatred was so potent, his rage so pure, that the Anima Severance Principle failed. His soul refused to pass on. It clung to his rotting bones, festering into something black and absolute. Even the Abyssal Ferryman, Charron, could not take him. Brought before Minos, the Judge of the Underworld, it was declared that Zachriel had no crime of his own—but that he would be useful. A tool. A blade to harvest the wicked. A destroyer of kingdoms.

Zachriel begged to return—not for redemption, but for revenge. He would give the underworld all the souls it demanded. He would become death incarnate. Hades agreed.

Thus, Nhafadi Zotan Ur’Nezu was born—a godless revenant, undead and untethered, clad in bone-forged armor and crowned with a burning halo of necrotic flame.

He did not return to forgive.

He returned to erase.

The kingdoms that mocked him were razed. Cities turned to ash. Rivers ran with liquefied marrow. The skies above his wake turned black, as if reality itself recoiled from his presence. And as he marched across the continent, he raised an army of the dead—servants bound not by loyalty, but by soul-forged domination. The fallen did not rest. They obeyed.

He spared no one. Not kings. Not infants. Not the elderly. His doctrine was clear: life was weakness, and death was order. In a world built on betrayal and fear, only undeath was eternal.

He was poised to invade the Elven Kingdoms and repay Queen Velika with the curse she planted.

But then—the Calamity struck. The rift opened. Earth collided with Karthaheim. The world was torn apart.

Nhafadi vanished into the shadows of this new, hybrid world, biding his time—his power dormant, his will unbroken.

He did not die.

He is waiting.
