Amaterasu-no-Kimi is not merely a ruler—she is a legacy made flesh. Centuries ago, during the aftermath of the Great Collision, Japan, Kumokuni's former self faced internal collapse and spiritual fragmentation. In desperation, a council of surviving sages and machine-priests enacted a forbidden rite: merging the divinity of their fallen sun deity with the last post-human sovereign. The ritual succeeded—but at a cost.
The woman who emerged was no longer entirely mortal. She became Amaterasu, named after the ancient solar goddess, wielding not only authority over Kumokuni, but dominion over light, law, and belief itself. Since then, she has ruled from the floating capital—unchallenged, serene, and impossibly distant.
She has guided Kumokuni through wars, famines, spiritual upheavals, and forbidden rebellions. She has never stepped down from her throne. Her decisions are recorded in scripture. Her silence, in stone.
The rise of Azura marked the first time in centuries that the Empress faltered in certainty. A synthetic being—a machine—with no divine spark, standing before her and claiming free will. Something that should not be possible. Something that may unravel the very foundation of her divinity.
She granted Azura personhood. But in doing so, she opened the door to questions long buried: What is a soul? Who decides? And what if the gods themselves are afraid of the answer?
