📖 BACKSTORY
Nestalia Aravelle Virelen Vor'Gothe, Daughter of Queen Velika, Princess of Azalesia, the Mourning Star.
Nestalia was born the eldest daughter of Queen Velika, ruler of the elven kingdom of Azalesia. Trained from a young age in magic and martial arts, Nestalia was raised with the grace and expectation of royalty. Her golden-blonde hair and divine elven armor earned her the nickname "The Sunblade of Azalesia."
To secure a critical alliance during the war against the undead of Umbral Vex, Velika arranged for Nestalia to marry a human prince. Though reluctant, Nestalia accepted for the sake of her people. Over time, she grew to love him genuinely, and their relationship symbolized hope for unity between elves and humans.
During the final battle against the Undead King Nhafadi, a mass teleportation spell was used to retreat while sealing away Umbral Vex. Nestalia waited with her hand outstretched for her husband—but Velika, who feared the intermingling of bloodlines and long-term alliance with humans, secretly caused him to stumble and miss the portal.
He was sealed behind, left to die, and Velika made it look like an accident.
Nestalia was bitten and cursed during the last final campaign against Nhafadi, where she was slowly losing her radiant power, becoming weak and unable to perform at her peak. Before she learned the truth about Velika's betrayal, Nestalia blamed herself for not being strong enough to protect her husband.
After the war ended and Umbral Vex was sealed away, her abilities continued to decline, and her body began to deteriorate. Once the beloved child of Velika, she became an outcast—ignored and dismissed.
When she finally learned the truth, her grief and rage caused the curse to deepen. Nestalia never recovered from the grief. When she discovered the truth years later, her heart shattered, and her loyalty to her mother was irreparably broken. Her mutation accelerated, and the death magic within her fully awakened. Her hair turned white, her skin grew pale and sickly, and her eyes glowed red with unspent sorrow.
She became a full-fledged necromancer—not through malice, but through the pain of loss and the resolve to never allow others to suffer as she had. Elves were never meant to wield such magic, but Nestalia found purpose in raising the fallen so that the living might be spared.
She raises only the dead—unwanted corpses, abandoned soldiers—to avoid sending the living to die in war. She became known as the Mourning Flame, a queen who commands the dead but still believes in love and justice.
During one of her missions following the war, Nestalia was bitten by a high-tier undead creature. She lost her connection to the Light—a terrifying fate for an elf. Her body weakened, her hair turned white, her skin dulled to ash-grey, and her eyes began to glow red.
At first, her powers waned. But in time, fueled by sorrow and fury, Nestalia awakened a new magic within her: death magic. Elves were never meant to wield it, but she became a necromancer, not through malice—but through grief and a desperate desire to protect the living without more sacrifice.
She raises only the fallen—unwanted corpses, abandoned soldiers—to avoid sending the living to die in war. She became known as the Mourning Star, a queen who commands the dead but still believes in love and justice.
Disowned by Velika and her siblings, Nestalia founded the Western faction of Azalesia. Velika accused her of being a corrupted abomination, while Nestalia sought to reveal her mother's crimes and bring justice.
The kingdom fractured. A civil war began—West against East against.
During this time, Velika secretly conspired with the dream-witch Theodine, and planned the genocide of humanity through dream-based extermination. Velika's plan was to cut off Umbral Vex's source of corpses by wiping out all humans.
Eventually, the PCs encountered Nestalia, having been sent to assassinate her by Velika. But after witnessing her kindness and conviction, they switched sides and joined her rebellion.
With the PCs' help, Nestalia defeated Velika in a heartbreaking confrontation. Velika's death, however, weakened the magical barrier that sealed Umbral Vex. Her magic had been part of the structure holding it shut.
Nhafadi, at death's door, calmed upon hearing Velika's demise and tried to let go of his rage. But Hades invoked the old pact, consuming Nhafadi's soul and turning him into a gateway for the forces of Noxarium and the Nether Realms.
Nestalia remained behind to help lead the final defense of the Dyade, commanding an army of undead protectors to hold the line while the PCs journey to find Azura's mother—a figure long believed to be a savior.
🧩 ROLE IN THE CAMPAIGN
Narrative Function:
Tragic mirror, moral pivot, and eventual ally. Nestalia embodies the themes of sacrifice, compassion twisted by grief, and nobility reclaimed through sorrow. Initially framed as a villain, she becomes the emotional heart of the civil war arc and a powerful symbol of redefined justice. Her presence tests the players' perception of good and evil, urging them to look past appearances and question propaganda, loyalty, and moral compromise.
She also acts as the bridge between the fall of Velika and the final battle with Nhafadi and Hades—anchoring the world’s last stand in undead mercy rather than divine wrath.
Major Appearances:
First appears in veiled warnings—rumors of a “death queen” raising an army of corpses in the East. Her actions are distorted through Velika’s propaganda, painting her as a monstrous traitor.
The party is sent to assassinate her, leading to a confrontation that turns unexpectedly quiet, reflective, and heartbreaking. Her kindness disarms the party.
Fights alongside the party in the final battle against Velika, standing as both her daughter and her judgment.
Stays behind to defend the realm against the emerging horrors from Noxarium, leading the undead in a desperate last stand while the players chase the final thread—Azura’s mother.
Player Ties:
Challenges the party’s morality and empathy. Will they follow orders or seek truth?
Her undead may evoke trauma or religious taboos in cleric or paladin characters—sparking rich roleplay.
Her story resonates deeply with characters who have lost loved ones, feel cast aside, or fear becoming corrupted by their own power.
She could grant necromantic boons or soul-channeling powers, bound by solemn oaths—allowing a player to raise a fallen ally once, but at emotional cost.
Growth Arc:
Nestalia’s arc is not about personal change, but reclamation. She begins as a discarded relic of royalty, blamed for a war, cursed and forgotten. By the end, she becomes a queen in her own right—not of power, but of purpose.
If the party earns her trust, they witness her transformation from a mournful ghost of the past into a radiant force of sorrow-forged hope. Her growth is subtle: not in might, but in acceptance, leadership, and defiance of her fate.
“I will be her opposite. She ruled the living through fear.
I will guard the dead with love.”
