📜 Overview

“A Rune is not just a symbol. It is a vessel. A cage for thunder. A prison for flame.”
— Arch-Technomancer Lysarah Kvenn, Rune-Smith's Lexicon, Vol I

Sigils are the instructional framework of magic in the Dyade. Where Runes store and amplify raw, type‑specific magical energy, Sigils define how that energy is expressed, when it is released, and what form it takes in the physical world.

A Rune without a Sigil is inert.
A Sigil without a Rune is powerless.

Only together do they form a functional magical system.

🧠 Core Function

Sigils act as arcane logic circuits, translating intent, motion, or conditions into actionable commands a Rune can obey.

In simple terms:

  • Rune = energy

  • Sigil = instruction

  • Device / body = conduit

  • User = trigger

Without Sigils, magic is chaotic, wasteful, or dangerously unstable.

🧩 What Sigils Control

Sigils determine five critical parameters of rune behavior:

1️⃣ Activation

How the Rune is triggered:

  • Manual will

  • Weapon motion (swing, impact, draw)

  • Vocal command

  • Emotional or physiological spike

  • Environmental condition (heat, moonlight, blood presence)

2️⃣ Output Shape

How the energy manifests:

  • Blade coating

  • Arc projection

  • Shockwave

  • Aura field

  • Internal reinforcement

3️⃣ Intensity & Drain

How much energy is released:

  • Constant trickle

  • Burst discharge

  • Scaling output (based on momentum, damage taken, or mana flow)

4️⃣ Targeting & Direction

Where the energy goes:

  • Forward arc

  • Radial burst

  • Self-only

  • Bound ally

  • Marked enemy

5️⃣ Safety & Limits

What prevents catastrophic failure:

  • Overdraw prevention

  • Backflow dampening

  • Emergency shutdowns

  • Feedback routing

“A poorly written Sigil doesn’t fail. It improvises.”

✍️ Physical Form of Sigils

Sigils are not decorative runes. They are precise, geometric arcane scripts that must be executed flawlessly.

Common manifestations:

  • Etched lines along weapon channels

  • Layered glyph arrays on armor plating

  • Subdermal sigil‑tattoos (temporary or permanent)

  • Floating projection arrays in ritual spaces

  • Nano‑engraved circuits in arcanotech devices

The geometry matters. A single misaligned stroke can invert effects, drain the wrong Rune, or cause feedback rupture.

🛠 Sigil–Rune Interaction

A Rune cannot decide how to release its energy. It relies entirely on Sigils.

Example: Flame Rune in a Sword

  • Without Sigils
The blade grows warm. Nothing else happens.

  • With Sigils

    • Sigil of Motion Detection → detects swing velocity

    • Sigil of Directed Release → projects fire along blade edge

    • Sigil of Throttle → limits burn to a controlled arc

Result: a flaming slash instead of an explosion in the wielder’s hand.

🧬 Types of Sigils

🔹 Trigger Sigils

Define when activation occurs.

  • On impact

  • On draw

  • On heartbeat spike

  • On spoken command

🔹 Shaping Sigils

Define form.

  • Edge‑binding

  • Cone spread

  • Pulse wave

  • Focused lance

🔹 Regulation Sigils

Prevent overload and waste.

  • Drain limiters

  • Cooldown cycles

  • Emergency rune severance

🔹 Conditional Sigils

Advanced logic based on state.

  • “If injured, release”

  • “If surrounded, burst”

  • “If ally nearby, redirect”

🔹 Anchor Sigils

Bind effects to objects, locations, or bodies.

  • Weapon‑bound enchantments

  • Area wards

  • Living sigil brands

🧠 Intent Encoding

Sigils are the translator between will and physics.

A mage’s intent alone is too unstable to control raw rune energy. Sigils encode that intent into a fixed, repeatable structure.

This allows:

  • Non‑mages to wield rune‑powered weapons

  • Engineers to build reliable arcanotech

  • Military units to standardize magical effects

“Magic stops being poetry once Sigils enter the room. It becomes engineering.”

⚠️ Failure & Corruption

Sigils can fail in terrifying ways:

  • Fractured Sigils → erratic output, misfires

  • Overwritten Sigils → conflicting commands

  • Corrupted Sigils → parasitic behavior, soul bleed

  • Recursive Loops → infinite drain until Rune shatters

Umbral and necromantic sigils are especially dangerous, often exhibiting semi‑sentient behavior.

🏛 Cultural & Historical Notes

  • Sigil‑craft rose alongside Rune technology after the Collision

  • Kumokuni perfected micro‑sigil layering, allowing compact but lethal designs

  • Elven sigils favor flowing fractal logic

  • Human sigils emphasize redundancy and safety locks

  • Black‑market sigils often remove limiters… intentionally

🧷 In‑World Maxim

“Runes fuel.
Sigils decide.
And the foolish forget which one is in charge.”
