The Vivis Codex is not a book — it is a living scripture, grown in flesh and root, rewritten daily by those who live and change. Followers of this sacred biological faith believe that life is sacred not for its purity, but for its persistence. Where others see deformity or mutation as a curse, the Codex sees evolution, resilience, and sacred transformation.
According to its teachings, the divine force of life is not static. It adapts. It survives. It changes to meet the wounds the world inflicts — and in doing so, it transcends limitation. Whether through accelerated healing, unnatural growth, or communion with the monstrous and wild, the Vivis faithful channel life’s refusal to die.
Ideals and Commandments
Followers are expected to live by the Four Living Doctrines, often carved into barkskin or tattooed on flesh:
Life Must Endure — Even if it must change beyond recognition. Even if the form becomes monstrous. Survival is sacred.
Pain Is Transformation — Suffering reshapes. Endurance is holy.
All Evolution Is Sacred — Even unnatural or grotesque forms bear divine purpose. Mutation is not corruption, but ascension.
Mercy Is Extended Survival — Healing others, preserving life, is the highest form of worship.
These are not passive virtues. Followers are called to intervene — to save life, reshape it, or merge with it when needed. The Codex teaches that inaction in the face of suffering is betrayal of the divine will to persist.
Clergy and Followers
The Vivis Codex draws a wide and eclectic range of adherents, from wild biomancers to serene healers:
Mutant Priests — Those who deliberately alter their own bodies through sacred ritual or genetic symbiosis
Biohackers & Symbiotes — Scientists turned spiritualists, who grow holy grafts or wear living armor
Wound-Weavers — Combat medics and battlefield surgeons who channel regenerative miracles
Grotesque Acolytes — Individuals who bear visible mutations as marks of divine favor
Eco-Wardens — Guardians of ancient, overgrown sacred sites where the Codex grows wild and self-aware
These devotees see beauty in the grotesque, reverence in the adaptive, and divinity in the biological. To them, the monstrous is not feared — it is embraced.
Sacred Miracles and Blessings
(These powers may manifest in NPCs or as class features/domains for clerics, druids, or paladins of the Codex.)
🩸 Regenerative Pulse
Once per long rest, a follower may restore massive tissue damage — regrowing lost limbs, purging disease, or even stabilizing a dying ally. The healed may bear unusual traits (vein-colored birthmarks, animalistic features, etc.) afterward.
🌿 Symbiotic Bond
The faithful may form a temporary or permanent bond with a nearby plant or animal, gaining one of its traits:
Barklike skin (AC boost)
Toxin glands (venomous attacks)
Bat-like echolocation
Chameleon dermis (stealth)
These bonds may become permanent with time and exposure.
🧠 Biological Empathy
Beasts — even monstrous aberrations or mutated animals — hesitate to attack the faithful. Plants shift to shield, lift, or restrain others at the follower's command. This is not mind control, but kinship.
🧬 Survival Surge
When reduced to near death, the faithful may undergo a sudden, violent biological mutation to survive. Examples include:
Sprouting claws or tusks
Growing a secondary heart
Generating adaptive skin resistant to the current damage type
These effects last 1 minute and may leave permanent physical changes.
Rituals and Sacred Practices
The Bleeding Bloom – A seasonal rite in which followers offer blood and flesh to a sacred grove, prompting it to grow strange fruit — sometimes edible, sometimes prophetic.
The Moltfast – A week of fasting and meditation in anticipation of a “molt” — when a believer sheds skin, organ, or body part to grow a stronger one.
Fleshcraft Sermons – Preached with open bodies, showing living diagrams of mutation, surgery, and symbiosis. The faithful are taught anatomy through self-experience.
Relationship to Other Faiths
The Vivis Codex is considered heretical by many Lawful-aligned religions that value order, purity, or the sanctity of the unaltered form. However, many followers coexist with druids, wild gods, and certain Life or Nature domain faiths that accept mutation as part of nature’s will.
Some darker powers have tried to co-opt the Codex — especially gods of pestilence or aberration — but true Vivis practitioners reject decay without renewal. Rot is death. Mutation is life.
