Volume 1: Remnants in Reverie

Chap 5

Where the Silence Waits

🎭 MQ1 – "Burning Sky, Broken Wing"

The PCs’ escape ship crash-lands in a remote, shielded forest basin. The surrounding environment is beautiful but strange—quiet in an unnatural way.

Challenges:

  • Patch wounds, gather scattered gear, and put out a fire before it draws attention

  • One PC may be unconscious or badly injured from the escape

  • Establish shelter and survival basics

Optional Hook:
The area was once used by Dämmerlicht teams. PCs find an old cabin, inside: a photograph of a squad… one of whom looks eerily like a PC.

🎭 MQ2 – "The Fire Is Warm"

A communal scene around a fire. Cold night. Wounded bodies. Shaky hands. PCs can finally talk—really talk.

Opportunities:

  • PCs share what they remember from the facility, what they’ve lost, what they feared

  • Flashback interludes to life before Dämmerlicht

  • Share food, warmth, maybe even jokes—forced but healing

Optional Hook:
An NPC (maybe the civilian pilot or wounded tech) sings a lullaby they heard in the Hollow Core during blackout. It shouldn’t be possible.

🎭 MQ3 – "Dreams and Data Ghosts"

During the night, one or more PCs dream. Vivid, unreal visions filled with memory overlays and distorted timelines.

Dream Themes (choose or assign):

  • Seeing a lost sibling again

  • A final moment with someone before conscription

  • The Hollow Core speaking through a false version of a loved one

  • A forgotten promise resurfacing

Twist:
One dream ends with a different person speaking directly to the PC—a calm, female voice:

“You broke the loop. That means it’s your story now.”

🎭 MQ4 – "The Stranger With Salt in His Voice"

At dawn, the PCs are approached by a cloaked wanderer or rider—a grizzled figure who calls himself Garven, an ex-merc, now trader and scout for a neutral settlement called Stonegale Reach.

Choices:

  • Trust him and travel there

  • Demand supplies and move on

  • Follow his story and hear his account of Bastion’s earlier atrocities

Optional Hook:
He carries an encrypted data shard from an old friend… one of the squadmates who died in Bastion. The message says:

“If you’re seeing this, I didn’t make it. But you did. That means the world still has a chance.”

🎭 MQ5 – "Stonegale Reach"

A small community hidden in the valley cliffs. Peaceful. Defensive. Quiet. It’s run by survivors and former soldiers. Not saints—but they don’t ask questions.

Activities:

  • Medical treatment and recovery

  • Free RP time with locals—NPCs tell stories of how they fled Dämmerlicht programs, or what they lost

  • One child draws a picture of the PCs flying through the sky like angels… says they’re the “Awakened Ones from the Echo.”

Emotional Hook:
One PC finds something from their past here. A family name. A book. A pendant. Something forgotten—but sacred.

🎭 MQ6 – "Light That Flickers"

The PCs gather atop a cliff at sundown. The first real day they’ve had without gunfire in weeks. But in the distance—smoke rises again.

Choices:

  • Stay and protect this haven from incoming scouts

  • Move on while they still can

  • Reach out to new allies: rebel groups, neutral factions, old ghosts

Optional Hook:
The sickest PC collapses. A blood scan from Stonegale’s doctor confirms it: Psynapse Drift has begun.

🎭 MQ7 – "Before the Next Storm"

The PCs stand at a crossroads. They are no longer running. Not right now. But the world still hunts them—and Bastion hasn’t forgotten.

Consequences:

  • PCs receive a message ping—unknown sender. It simply says:
“You saw the Core. You survived. They won’t let that stand.”

  • News reaches Stonegale: another facility fell. But not to the military—something else.
    Something worse than Bastion Thorne.

Hooks for Chapter 6:

  • Join the rebellion forming in the shadows

  • Investigate the mystery behind Psynapse Drift and what it’s turning one PC into

  • Accept a dangerous mission from Garven: extract a child from another facility before they become the next Core candidate

🎭 MQ8 – "Bread and Embers"

The PCs are offered shelter in Stonegale, but food is scarce. They’re invited to share in the communal meal—a thick root broth, old grain, and ration bars turned into something almost warm.

Key Moments:

  • A young child (or teenager) with one prosthetic limb insists on offering their own share of food to the "heroes who fell from the sky"

  • A local elder shares a story about how the government once tested psionics in rural farming villages, with many “volunteers” never seen again

Emotional Beat:

  • One of the NPCs begins shaking during dinner. They used to be a Dämmerlicht handler. They see someone in the party who reminds them of a test subject they let die—and quietly begs forgiveness without saying why

🎭 MQ9 – "The Lantern Keeper's Wall"

PCs discover a stone wall outside the village lined with flickering lanterns. Each one represents a lost soul—etched names, some burned off by time. A grieving ritual.

Choices:

  • Add names of those lost at Bastion, or even those the PCs had to kill

  • Light a lantern for themselves—not out of mourning, but survival

  • Learn of a local woman who’s been lighting a new lantern every week… even though her son disappeared 5 years ago

Emotional Hook:
She gives a lantern to a PC and says:

"This one's for whoever you still see in your dreams."

🎭 MQ10 – "Tatters and Threads"

In the old market square, a former seamstress offers to repair their clothing or damaged armor. She's blind—but her hands still remember every thread.

Key Scene:

  • As she works, she quietly asks questions she shouldn't know:

    • "This one... he lost his brother, didn't he?"

    • "And you... you want to be anything but a killer."

  • Turns out she’s mildly psionic, but was “missed” during the sweeps. She's a Memory Weaver.

Optional Hook:
She offers to create a “binding thread” item for one PC—an accessory or trinket that will grow stronger the more they remember who they were before.

🎭 MQ11 – "Old Wounds, Open Skies"

The PCs are taken on a cliffside walk by Garven, the scout. He opens up fully, sharing the story of his squad being sent to capture a rogue psionic village—only to learn it was a lie.

Emotional Scene:

  • He describes killing innocents by accident. The final message he received was a child screaming through a radio: “Don’t let them find my sister!”

Choice:

  • He tells the PCs there’s a name he’s been chasing ever since: Skoii Skax. A mining outpost where the military “moves people” no one ever sees again.

🎭 MQ12 – "Truths Etched in Rust"

PCs find a broken Dämmerlicht helmet in a cave system nearby. It’s marked with a sigil none of them recognize—but one of them dreamed about it before.

Discoveries:

  • Data logs hint at secret missions in Skoii Skax

  • Mentions of "raw psionic crystallization," and “subterranean anomalies” fueling next-gen tech

  • Holographic logs show former squadmates asking to be extracted—and being denied

Tearjerker Moment:
One PC hears their own voice in the log—begging for help in a memory they don’t recall. It’s them, from a time that was erased.

🎭 MQ13 – "When the Wind Whispers Your Name"

The PCs are offered a choice: stay in the village and help defend it against raiders soon to arrive… or follow Garven on a personal mission to find the truth beneath Skoii Skax.

Consequences:

  • If they stay: one NPC may die in their place, protecting the child who gave them food in MQ8

  • If they go: Garven gives them access to smuggler intel, a land transport, and coordinates to approach Skax from the eastern ridge, avoiding major patrols

Hook for Chapter 6:

  • As they prepare to leave, the Memory Weaver gives them a final message:

“The Hollow was not the first. Skoii is older. And the thing that sleeps beneath it... dreams of you.”
