Overview
The Undead of Umbral Vex are not a natural race, nor are they a curse. They are the crafted post-life civilization created under the reign of Nhafadi Zotan Ur’Nezu, the Undead King — once a mortal human, now an immortal necro-arcanist whose empire of bone stretches across the blackened catacombs and soul-scarred badlands of Karthaheim.
Composed primarily of reanimated humans and orcs, these undead soldiers, workers, and savants were chosen not by bloodline or birthright, but by how efficiently they died. Under the guiding principle known as Vex’s Law of Tethered Essence, the Undead King’s arcanists reanimate only corpses whose souls have “slipped” from their body cleanly, leaving no tethered spirit to resist control. This has made humans and orcs the most desired raw material in all of undeath — easy to claim, easier to command.
The Undead of Umbral Vex serve a purpose. They are constructed, not raised. Their bodies are reforged in the Blackforges, minds hollowed or infused with recycled personalities from the Soul Reserves, and their roles selected by function: soldier, builder, acolyte, archivist, spy.
They exist to serve Nhafadi Zotan’s will — and he does not rest.
Though feared and reviled across Karthaheim and beyond, these undead are not mindless. Many are intelligent, cunning, and cultured, if utterly loyal. Some even retain memories from their first life, merged into their new form. They are a people — strange, horrifying, but undeniably civilized.
“The grave was never our end. It was only the mold for our true shape.”
— Gravemind Artax, Philosopher-Lich of the Ninth Ossuary
History and Lore
The Undead race traces its origin to the Ash Crown War, when Nhafadi Zotan, once a mortal human deathmage, rose through battlefield necromancy by unlocking what no other lich could: consistency. Where others raised rotting husks that tore themselves apart or turned mad from soul resistance, Zotan discovered the principle that would make him king: Vex’s Law of Tethered Essence.
By harvesting corpses whose souls had already slipped from the body — especially humans and orcs — he created undead with perfect stability, and did so at scale. His armies did not falter. They did not rebel. They grew with every battlefield lost.
Soon, Zotan formed the Umbral Vex, a literal empire of undeath that thrived in the no-man’s-lands where magic storms raged and life dared not walk. He established the Crypt Cities, underground necropolises forged from bones, iron, and psionically sealed vaults. Above them float soul-beacons, black spires that call new spirits and whisper death into the wind.
The living races rallied, terrified. A joint force of Earthside and Karthaheim heroes burned half of Umbral Vex to ash — but it was too late. The dead could be remade. The King could not die. Even today, centuries later, new undead still rise, still serve, and still shape the shadow borders of every continent.
Zotan does not conquer by sword alone. He whispers through necro-scribes, makes deals with outcast lords, and sends spy-specters to listen from the walls of every living nation.
Physical Descriptions
Undead forms vary drastically based on purpose, preservation, and the art of reconstruction. Not all are rotting horrors — many are pristine, custom-forged, and functionally immortal. The following are common classes of undead:
Thrall-Class (Labor & Infantry)
Minimal decay; reinforced joints; embedded necro-runes
Eyes glow faint green or violet; typically silent unless commanded
Echo-Skulls (Scouts & Sensors)
Disembodied skulls inscribed with psionic sigils
Can speak, record, or broadcast through necro-frequency
Sometimes hover; often deployed in flocks for surveillance
Bonebound Knights
Fully armored skeletal warriors
Bones bound together with iron wire, soul-thread, and reinforced with magic
Sworn to guard key necromancers or vaults; many retain memory-echoes from life
Graveminds
Intelligent undead with restored or implanted personalities
Some are fused liches, others constructs with harvested soul-fragments
Handle planning, research, ritual, and diplomacy
Flesh-Fused Constructs
Multiple corpses combined into one monstrous form
Built for siege, hauling, or terror
Often mutated by ambient Monicues for extra instability
All undead of Umbral Vex bear the Mark of Ur'Nezu — a sigil etched into bone or embedded in soul-code, allowing for identification and mass recall if needed.
Culture and Society
Though they lack joy, art, or music in the traditional sense, the Undead do have culture:
Ossuary Halls: Ornate bone structures, often engraved with battle-records
The Archive Crypts: Libraries of preserved brains, memories, and soul-recordings
Ritual Dismantling: The dead are recycled with reverence; old bones melted and reborn into new forms
Undeath Hierarchies:
Nhafadi, the Undying Sovereign
Throne-Liches — elite undead with command and autonomy
Bone-Savants — ritualists, soul-weavers, necromantic engineers
Gravehosts — units leading squads of reanimated dead
Thralls & Reapers — rank-and-file soldiers and harvesters
The undead do not eat, sleep, or reproduce — they are crafted, summoned, or assembled. Their only celebrations are ritual reanimation ceremonies, where new undead are welcomed into function.
