Volume 3: A Life Borrowed, A Soul Reclaimed

Chap 5

Into the Cloud, Infiltrating Kaku

🎭 MQ1 – “Ghosts in the Slipstream”

Synopsis:
The party departs under cloak and silence. A stealth VTOL deposits them at the edge of Kumokuni airspace, where they are handed off to Zephyrims—elegant winged emissaries who navigate storm thermals with grace. With barely a word, the Zephyrims guide them to the underbelly of Kaku, disappearing once their job is done.

Subquests:

  • “Ride the Whisperwinds” – A risky descent ends with the party securing themselves on the beams and ducts of Kaku’s lowest structures.

  • “Secure a Breach Point” – PCs must find an access hatch or crawlspace to enter the city unnoticed.

RP Hooks:

  • The Zephyrim carrier softly warns them, “Kumokuni isn’t paranoid. It’s precise. You’re not the first to try.”

  • One of the party catches a glimpse of massive reactor ducts—hinting at the scale of Kaku's internal power.

🎭 MQ2 – “Concrete Catacombs”

Synopsis:
Now inside the industrial guts of Kaku, the party must blend in. Machines hiss, drones blink, and footsteps echo in metallic corridors. Kaku’s surveillance grid is tight, and every move must be calculated.

Subquests:

  • “Dead Channel” – PCs find a corrupted maintenance network node they can temporarily hijack for localized maps and enemy patrol data.

  • “Passcode Puzzle” – A set of industrial doors require a passcode sequence—PCs can hack or follow a patrol to overhear it.

RP Hooks:

  • A voice plays on intercom: “Unauthorized presence will be met with zero tolerance. No trial. No appeal.”

  • They find a faded graffiti tag in an old maintenance shaft: “We wanted freedom. All we got was surveillance.”

🎭 MQ3 – “Surface Tension”

Synopsis:
Reaching the surface, the party finally sees the true face of Kaku: neon-scripted towers, wind-swept bridges, and a blend of ancient Japanese architecture layered over cold chrome. They soon witness just how harsh justice is here.

Subquests:

  • “Civilian Camouflage” – PCs must blend into local crowds, posing as researchers or tech migrants.

  • “Echoes of the Red and Blue” – A hostage situation breaks out in a nearby plaza. PCs watch as Kurohana agents (Mio and Naide) arrive—efficient, cold, and terrifying.

RP Hooks:

  • PCs see Naide only briefly: silver hair, glowing eyes, elegant in execution. She is gone in a blink.

  • A child near the party whispers, “Those two? They’re the gods of death. If you see them, you’re already gone.”

  • If PCs go to a bar, they will hear on the news that the Elven Kingdom of Azalesia officially split into West and East, tension are high. East Azalesia Military is mobilzed.

🎭 MQ4 – “Ghost Rooms and Hollow Beds”

Synopsis:
With no safehouse or contact, the party must improvise. The undercity is dangerous, but within the maze of rooms and repurposed storage spaces, they find refuge—and clues.

Subquests:

  • “Shelter in Silence” – PCs stumble into a half-abandoned apartment zone beneath a railway. It houses a few odd, paranoid residents.

  • “The Whispering Old Man” – A reclusive tinkerer shares a story of a stolen shipment rerouted through an old data-cable tunnel—chips rumored to enhance thought-speed and reflexes.

RP Hooks:

  • The old man’s eyes flicker with retinal implants. He mutters, “One of those chips... it talked to me. Said her name was Azura.”

🎭 MQ5 – “Conversations in Static”

Synopsis:
Daylight filters through Kaku’s polarized dome, and the party splits up to gather intel. Cafés, labs, and black market booths hold secrets if the right questions are asked… and the right credits spent.

Subquests:

  • “Researcher’s Dilemma” – A disillusioned Kumokuni scientist overhears the party’s inquiries. She offers intel… in exchange for helping her smuggle her family out of the city.

  • “Market of Ghosts” – PCs enter a gray zone marketplace run by rogue engineers. Rumors flow freely—but prices are steep.

RP Hooks:

  • “You didn’t hear it from me… but the chips aren’t just tech. They’re grown. That’s all I’ll say.”

  • The rogue engineer shows the party a discarded prototype… one with a softly pulsing blue light.

🎭 MQ6 – “Blueprints of a Breach”

Synopsis:
The party finally pieces together the probable location of the cybernetic chip cache—a secured R&D vault within the Neo-Tek Spire. But it’s not just a matter of getting in. They’ll need plans, tools, and timing.

Subquests:

  • “The Spire’s Spine” – PCs gather blueprints from an old municipal database, showing hidden access vents.

  • “Hack the Mesh” – They must infiltrate a drone relay network to mask their approach.

  • “Acquire a Distraction” – A stolen police uniform or a fabricated riot may give them a window.

RP Hooks:

  • A Kurohana report flickers on a screen nearby: “...possible foreign agents identified. Surveillance tightens.”

  • A kid gives the PCs a lollipop and says, “You look nervous. Don’t get disappeared, okay?”

🎭 MQ7 – “Plans of Silence and Storm”

Synopsis:
The time for action nears. The party must finalize their approach—covert, overt, or something in between. The city tightens. Tensions rise. Somewhere beneath all this steel… Azura waits.

Subquests:

  • “Silent Entry” – PCs can try to enter through a medical supply conduit with forged credentials.

  • “The Riot Route” – Stirring unrest in a nearby labor zone could divert security.

  • “Hired Hands” – PCs may recruit a local outcast merc to serve as guide (for a price).

RP Hooks:

  • A message pings on their device:
"One chance. One shot. Get the chip, or don’t come back." –The Krey

  • From a distance, Mio watches… unseen.
