Volume 3: A Life Borrowed, A Soul Reclaimed

Chap 7

Wolves of the White Veil

🎭 MQ1 – “Echoes in the Bazaar”

Synopsis:
The Ashrunners find themselves wandering the chaotic, vibrant open-air markets of Al Quasaran’s Verdant Loop district. Among the spice merchants, whisper-brokers, potion peddlers, and exo-tech hawkers, they can shop, trade, or steal… and interact with a kaleidoscope of NPCs.

Subquests:

  • “The Vendor Who Remembers” – An elderly merchant recognizes a PC from a long time ago. Was it real? Or implanted memory from a stolen mind?

  • “Thornfruit Bargain” – PCs must haggle for exotic supplies while dodging scam-artists, curious kids, and pickpockets.

  • “Relic of the Forgotten War” – A strange device calls to a PC. They can buy it… but doing so flags them on an old war database.

RP Hooks:

  • A blind street bard sings a tune that eerily references Azura’s arrival.

  • The Krey are watching. You’re not alone in the market. One of the stalls is fake—spying on you.

🎭 MQ2 – “Dust and Reflection”

Synopsis:
The party is invited by a kind local (possibly a former merc) to a quiet oasis tavern just outside the city—known as The Last Ember. It’s a humble watering hole surrounded by memory stones, poetry slates, and open-sky meditation rings.

Subquests:

  • “The Drink Called Silence” – The bartender offers a special drink that induces lucid memories. PCs each experience a vivid vision from their past.

  • “Tales by Firelight” – An old storyteller spins a tale that feels eerily parallel to the party’s journey.

  • “Mark of the Watcher” – A PC finds an ancient brand on the tavern’s wall matching a dream-symbol they’ve had before.

RP Hooks:

  • One NPC may talk about Theodine’s song, claiming they heard it once… in a dream.

  • A peaceful break… until one PC wakes up in the morning with someone else’s ring in their pocket. Whose was it?

🎭 MQ3 – “Ash in the Letterbox”

Synopsis:
While laying low in Al Quasaran, the party receives an encrypted dead-drop: a single black envelope slipped under their safehouse door bearing no seal—only ash inside and coordinates traced to an abandoned comms station in the tundra. Whoever left it knew about the chip heist, the Krey, and even Azura. This spooks their contact network, who beg them to investigate quietly—word is, similar messages have shown up across former warzones.

Subquests:

  • “Decode the Ash Trail” – PCs must piece together the cipher hidden in the ash residue and physical letter, possibly with help from a codebreaker NPC or Azura’s chip glitching and revealing fragments.

  • “Comms Station Echoes” – The comms station is a frozen wreck half-swallowed by frost. Inside: a destroyed broadcast tower, charred equipment, and a single data core still humming—containing a distorted voice log about "Project Mourning Sun" and something called Shivaverse Protocol. It mentions Zimovya Reach.

  • “Echoes of the Frozen War” – Nearby, the ruins of a skirmish site reveal old Vultaire merc bodies and scavenger drones looting corpses. One drone says it was responding to “a ghost signal from the Reach.”

RP Hooks:

  • An NPC info broker mutters: “Only a fool chases ghosts into Zimovya Reach. But then again... I always liked fools.”

  • Azura's chip glitches for a moment during the ash decoding, whispering: "Not a warning. A request..."

🎭 MQ4 – “The Frozen March”

Synopsis:
Determined to chase the signal—and answers—the party embarks northward across ravaged wastelands, ruined train tracks, and snow-choked roads toward Zimovya Reach. The journey is brutal but strangely beautiful. Between storms and silence, the land seems to remember.

Subquests:

  • “Snowblind” – The party is caught in a sudden whiteout blizzard. They must rely on survival instincts, warmth, and teamwork to press on without splitting. They may discover a lost caravan frozen mid-step, its cargo untouched.

  • “A Wolf in Iron” – They are stalked by a cybernetic beast: part machine, part mutated apex predator. Tracks suggest someone released it as a security measure. Fighting it could bring them more trouble than it’s worth… but letting it live may be worse.

  • “A Memory in Ice” – The group finds a crashed Kumokuni drone, still partially active. It repeatedly speaks Naide's name. If investigated, it briefly projects a memory clip of Naide in training—showing a glimpse of her past and her orders.

RP Hooks:

  • NPC traveler: “Zimovya Reach was a graveyard long before the world ended. But it’s not empty.”

  • Faint echo from Azura’s chip: "She’s coming, but not out of hatred... yet."

🎭 MQ5 – “Zimovya Unbound”

Synopsis:
Welcome to Zimovya Reach—a frozen realm built on shattered bunkers, ice-buried arcologies, and broken megastructures. The locals survive off lost tech, barter economies, and bitter memory. The Reach isn’t a nation. It’s a wound that never closed.

Subquests:

  • “Speak the Quiet Tongue” – PCs must learn local customs, lingo, and hidden loyalties to avoid upsetting the fragile truces between the scavenger guilds, old warlords, and Vultaire splinter groups.

  • “Vault Beneath the Wastes” – PCs are tipped off about an underground vault that’s rumored to store tech from before the Calamity. It’s protected by both physical traps and mnemonic wards—only those who understand the Reach's past can enter.

  • “The Frozen Choir” – A wandering preacher offers strange hymns about “The Forgotten One” and references an entity that may have ties to the Umbral Vex. Locals avoid him, but he seems to know far more than he should.

RP Hooks:

  • A child gives one of the PCs a handmade doll resembling Azura… “She’s not from here, but she’s watching.”

  • In the distance, an aircraft with Kumokuni markings is spotted... flying low.

🎭 MQ6 – “Hearts Frozen, Hands Empty”

Synopsis:
To survive and barter in Zimovya, the PCs must gather rare resources from the ruins beyond the safe zones. Local scavengers point them toward a site known only as The Hollow Chapel—a collapsed structure once used by both war orphans and cultists during the old conflicts. Rumor says it now houses Ashsteel, a rare mineral needed for weapon augmentation… but also haunted by Specter Protocols—AI-driven defense constructs still active in the ruins.

Subquests:

  • “Vault of the Windless Bells” – Inside the chapel’s basement lies a sealed room of experimental tech from Kumokuni's past—likely an early Psynapse-09 testbed. It hums with faint psychic noise. Any PC entering alone experiences memory hallucinations tied to Naide, the serum, or past losses.

  • “Flesh Over Wire” – The group discovers a failed hybrid: a corpse-like android, melted and malformed, whispering for “the one who glows.” Its brain chip can be extracted, giving them data… but it may also trigger a trace signal.

  • “Ashsteel for the Blood Price” – Retrieving the Ashsteel requires extracting it from a crumbling, irradiated vault, forcing the team to either solve how to disable the defenses—or endure them.

RP Hooks:

  • A scavenger NPC tells the party: “Some tech wants to stay buried. Especially the kind that breathes.”

  • If Azura scans the vault, she mutters without intending to: “It remembers me…”

🎭 MQ7 – “Dead Drop Mirage”

Synopsis:
An encoded broadcast pulses through Zimovya’s private channels: an offer from a masked sender to trade information on Kumokuni’s next move—only if the party meets them alone, at midnight, in a place called The Shatterglass Field. This wasteland is full of jagged crystalline terrain, which distorts sight, sound, and even thoughts. The party walks into a trap, where reality bends and nothing is as it seems.

Subquests:

  • “Reflection Dances” – The field’s mirrored terrain creates hallucinations of enemies, friends, and past selves. PCs must pass Will saves or be drawn into false battles or paralyzed by visions of guilt, love, or longing. Azura’s projection flickers erratically.

  • “The Masked Liar” – The contact turns out to be a rogue former Kurohana agent—half-mad, half-truthful. They offer data: a traced flight path from Kaku… leading straight to Zimovya. They warn the PCs: “They’re not chasing you. They’re studying you.”

  • “Signal Bloom” – The moment the data is downloaded, a silent pulse is emitted—triggering a tracker. The rogue agent goes still. Their body collapses like a puppet with its strings cut.

RP Hooks:

  • Azura, quietly: “She’s here.”

  • From the field’s edge, just before the scene ends, a brief visual glitch: a glowing yellow eye watching from the shadows.
